Is Secondary Targeting Possible

Is it possible to target a location if your business isn’t located there? Perhaps your city doesn’t have enough search volume or you see greater potential in a nearby city. Maybe you’re in the suburbs and want to attract customers from a close, larger city. Regardless of the reasons why, this is a question we get a lot. In this post, we’ll explore how to target a different city—called secondary targeting.

Google My Business Listing

One important aspect of SEO is to have a Google My Business listing. If you’re trying to target another location, it’s not necessary to have a listing, but it’s helpful if you can make it happen. Another way to zero in on other locations is to build content about that location. For example, highlight events or things to do in that city, showcase local nonprofits, create city-specific service pages or demonstrate how your business is tied to that city.

Nearby Cities with Opportunities

In SEO, keyword competition is a factor. So, if you have a bigger city nearby with lower competition, you’ll have greater success than a flooded market. For example Denver, Loveland, Fort Collins, Longmont and Boulder are located close enough to one another where it makes sense to target an additional city if there’s lower competition around that area’s target specific keywords.

Success Stories

Keep in mind that it’s possible to target another location, but it’s not always easy. However, the right SEO team and strategy can often make it happen. Here are some Acquire SEO success stories of clients that have targeted areas outside of their location:
